Legoria Payton and Friends to light up stage for Live@5 Oct. 1
Legoria Payton and Friends, composed of singer Payton of White Hall, Ed Lawson of Little Rock on saxophone and Milt Jackson of Pine Bluff on guitar, will perform as part of the Arts & Science Center’s final Live@5 for 2010 from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at the Center, 701 Main St., Pine Bluff.
Payton says she enjoys performing at various venues and in a wide range of musical traditions. Her repertoire includes jazz, contemporary, rhythm and blues, Motown, easy listening, country, blues, standards, reggae, neo soul and gospel.
Church provided the first setting for Payton’s music quickly followed by her involvement in school choirs and competitions in her hometown of Detroit. Payton received a scholarship from Musical Youth International and a first place vocal music scholarship award from the United Ushers Association. She also performed with classmates and future music greats Greg Phillingaines and Geri Allen.
Along with pursing chemistry and science degrees – finally ending up with a physician assistant degree – Payton never forgot her love of music. While at Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., she had the opportunity to perform with the school’s Jubilee Singers in New York’s Carnegie Hall and perform with celebrities such as Tennessee Ernie Ford, Barbara Mandrell, Della Reese, Lucille Ball and Cicely Tyson.
Since relocating to Arkansas, Payton has performed with the Art Porter Singers in Little Rock, Ed Lawson & The Jazz Masters and the Milton Jackson Group. She is part of the praise and worship team at her church, Greater Fellowship Ministries, and has performed at the Governor’s Mansion, Cajun’s Wharf and Copeland’s Restaurant. She lives in White Hall with her two sons and 88-year-old mother, Legoria Vernon, who attends all her concerts.
