Fun Classes to begin in fall!

Beginning Photography

Beginning Photography will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 9-Oct. 14, at the Center. For ages teen to adult, the classes cost $75 for members and $110 for non-members. This class is taught by award-winning photographer Eric Maynard.

 

Saturday Scholars Classes

The Center is offering several children’s art and science classes this fall. For ages 2nd grade to 8th grade, each class is held from 1-4 p.m. on a fall Saturday and is linked to the exhibit on display this fall at the Center, Science & Art.  Classes can be purchased as a series or one at a time. Cost of the four classes in the series is $120 for members and $155 for non-members. Individual prices are with each class description. Scholarships are available. Call for more information. Classes, ages and dates are:

  • Making Sense of the World, a look at the world of the five senses, especially the sense of smell, Sept. 25, 3rd-8th grades. Participants will learn the science behind the art of making perfumes and stinky smells, too. Taught by Pine Bluff School District Gifted and Talented teacher Laura McNulty. Cost: $25/members or $60/non-members.
  • Creating Halloween Costumes (and return of Phantom of the Center Haunted House), a two-Saturday class, Oct. 16 and 23, 3rd-8th grades. Participants will learn the science behind creating a costume out of old carpet squares and then will decorate them. On the final Saturday, the class will end with a haunted house in the Center. Taught by UAPB art professor William Detmers with help from UAPB students. Cost: $50/members or $85/non-members for the two-day class.
  • Photography for Kids, Nov. 20, 2nd-8th grades. Participants will learn the basics of digital photography, exploring photography as both a science and an art. Taught by instructors from the Mosaic Templars Museum in Little Rock. This class is being offered at a special scholarship rate for all of $15 for each participant.
  • Origami and Jewelry, Dec. 11, 3rd-8th grades. Learn the science and art of origami and jewelry making. Create Christmas gifts. Taught by UAPB art professor Husny Dahlan, ASC Curator Howard Spencer and artist Zac Ray.

 

Adult Cooking!

The Arts & Science Center also is offering a series of fall cooking and wine classes for adults. Classes will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday nights at various locations around Pine Bluff. Costs for the classes are $25/members or $60 non-members per class, $40/member or $75 for any two classes or $80/member or $115/non-member for the series of four classes. Classes and dates are:

  • Game-Day Delights, Sept. 27. From appetizers to main meal fare, your game-day parties will be off to a great start before they blow the whistle.
  • Spices and Soups, Oct. 11. Learn the science behind the use of spices and tricks to creating wonderful soups for cold winter nights. Taught by Pine Bluff Country Club Chef Jamie McAfee in the club’s new kitchen.
  • Apples and Baking, Oct. 18. An apple fell on Newton’s head but in our cooking class, apples will be baked into pies, turned into applesauce, mixed with salads. Learn the science behind the art of baking!
  • Red and White Wine, Oct. 25.  Taught by wine connoisseur Bruce Cockran, this class will introduce us to new wines. Participants also will learn about the science behind creating and enjoying great wines.

Minimum: 10 in group

A program for organizations, daycare centers, church groups and day camps – any group is welcome. Participants tour the Center and then participate in an arts and science workshop led by qualified staff. Program lasts 1.5 hours. Minimum of 10 participants required. Class choices include “NanoDays,” “Mask-Making,” “Geocaching Adventures” or “Theater Games.”
